For a long time the panel buyer's first question was the price per square metre. On most projects today the first question comes from somewhere else: what U-value does this section give, which fire class is certified, how many weeks until it is on site. What changed is not the sector but where the decision is made: the choice moved from the site to the design table.

Energy cost overtook the initial investment

In a heated building, the heat leaving the envelope returns as a bill every year. The cost of going up one step in insulation thickness is paid once, and the return is taken over the life of the building.

Making that calculation does not require asking the supplier. The thermal transmittance of the section comes from the U-value calculator and its annual value from the heat loss calculator. The second works with your own unit price: the fuel price is not written on the site, because a figure that changes every three months goes stale on a page.

The fire class stopped being a preference

Whatever class the regulation requires, that is the core. Where A2-s1-d0 is mandatory, a rock wool or hybrid core is chosen; where B-s1-d0 is enough, a PIR core gives the same insulation in a thinner section. What the buyer expects today is not that the class is stated but that it is certified: is the EN 13501-1 report attached to the quotation.

Lead time is asked about like a technical property

The schedule of a project does not appear in the technical table of a panel, but it weighs on the decision just as much. The question has three concrete parts: up to how many metres does the panel come in one piece, how many square metres load onto a truck, and how much does a custom colour lengthen the production flow.

In the standard range the one-piece length is 15.5 metres. The square metres per vehicle vary with the product and the thickness; the loading quantities calculator gives the vehicle count and the layout.

Documents are asked for before the catalogue

This is the most concrete change in habit on the purchasing side. CE, CPR, ISO and test reports used to go into the file after the order; today they are asked for while the quotations are being assessed. A performance value with no document counts as unwritten.

That is why there are fields left blank on this site: the fire class field is empty for products with an EPS core, because no EN 13501 class has been published for them. Writing an estimated value is worse than a value that comes with a document.

Enquiries arrive as problems, not product names

The language of enquiries changed too. Instead of "a five-rib 60 mm panel", what arrives is "there is condensation on the warehouse roof", "the cold room sweats around the door", "I need to span 24 metres without a column".

The list of expectations got shorter and harder

Today's panel buyer wants four things: a certified performance value, a calculation they can verify with their own figures, a clear delivery schedule and a joint detail that holds on site. All four can be open before the quotation; when they are not, the decision comes down to price, and price is the shortest-lived criterion on a project.
